I worked out what the problem was, it wasn't gcc-4 that was the issue, I hadn't
copied across the stage1 and 2 files onto my /boot partition since way back
when. The ones I was using were from grub-0.96 and didn't work with grub-0.97
or the grub-0.95 from Fedora or Ubuntu. Mandrake was using grub-0.96, which is
why that one worked. Copying /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* to /boot/grub solved the
problem. Sorry for the noise.
