Sorry to repeat this but.. standards can stifle innovation. Having said
that the standards which are employed are on a basic level and are
pretty solid (ie. syntax, open file formats, gui standards and similar)

No worries, these type of problems are experienced all the time. My
tomtom (road traffic route finder thingy) works well though, so it is
possible, just not as hassle free as proprietry software. You get what
you pay for... occasionally! It's easier to enjoy it at home than
develop things with it (linux) for large scale streamlined businesses.
