I agree totally Matt, but it is much easier to identify what you need
and what you don't need if you do lfs, seeing a really fast boot with
just the things you need was the first and biggest reward for me :)
As regards tips: I would say the best way of getting fast boot times is
to compile all the needed stuff into the kernel ("y" not "m") and remove
ALL unwanted crap, hotplug can take forever with pcmcia (yenta)
especially.
