Ok, tried evdev, after a bit of research on how to configure it. Running
the default X session (twm and xterms), the scroll wheel works fine, but
when running my usual Gnome session, it chokes on startup due to
gnome-settings-daemon crashing. Google shows a few references to similar
problems, but suggests no solutions.
Anyone got any ideas, either on making the scrollwheel work with the
standard mouse driver, or making Gnome (2.13.x) work with the evdev
driver?
Do you need to use the evdev driver? I don't know what it does, so I
didn't build it. I just built three input drivers, xf86-input-keyboard,
xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-void. I'm not sure that last one's
needed so I'll try without it next time.
