I think you'll be able to use X environment from the liveCD in your P II.
The liveCD will boot in a text console and you have to type "startx" to go
with X.
And I think it's worth to install BLFS on a P II.
Perhaps it will compile things a bit slowly... but do you care so much?

After the creation of your partition (one of the things you will do first, in
chapter 2.3) you will be able to save your files in some directory there.
