I don't fully understand the sound set-up, but what I have now works, mostly.
I'm running LFS version CVS-2004-04-06 with a full KDE desktop. I did install
Alsa, but, though it works, the kernel still reports no devices on boot-up.
The KDE Desktop can make any sound it wants, but most other apps need me to
stop the sound server with artsshell suspend, or use artsdsp <command> to
play sound properly.

This has work fine for most of my needs, but I recently got Quake4 and it just
won't play nicely.

I've tried using set s_driver oss, stopping the sound server and artsdsp
quake4, all with the same result, the Quake4 initialization can't
find /dev/dsp, and disables sound.

I know this is weak on critical info, but I don't know what files to look at
and post for better troubleshooting. I'm sure it's something simple I've
missed, but I've never understood sound card setup properly, so I guess now's
as good a time as any to dig into it.

Cheers,

        John Gay
