Is there a reason why you're installing the full perl?  It's not
needed at all and the book has been tested with only the few
extensions for almost 3 years now.  Also, I would suggest setting the
locale.  It doesn't hurt you at all, and this is how it's been done
for years.  You wouldn't want to get bitten by a bug like this:
