This does not seem to be the case. Otherwise, how would 'lspci' command
show the result as:
"Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro
100].(rev 08)"
Have you tried this particular release? If so, please let me know which
particular configuration of kernel I may be missing.

lspci has nothing to do with the kernel, it simply maps device ID's to
haardware information stored in the pci.id's file.
You need to configure your kernel to include the appropriate network
card driver as either a module or built into the kernel. I suggest
trying under device drivers ---> network devices
