The LFS 6.1.1 book says that "the Linux source tree is often retained for a long time." What reasons may one have to do this?

Some packages require the kernel source be available for the package to install. One in particular: RT2500 driver for my wireless card. Other packages will say in the README or INSTALL file whether or not they require the kernel source to be present for installation.
