I always reboot after dinking with gconf. Maybe just:
gconftool-2 --shutdown
would work. According to the faq; it shuts down automatically a few
minutes after last use, the --shutdown should be immediate. Maybe, I
don't know, I'll keep an eye on it next gnome install.
