Responding to Ken and Vladimir, in turn:

Very good observations. I checked to see if [g]awk was in my toolbox and
indeed, it was missing. No links in /tools/bin - nothing. I checked to
make sure I compiled it -- and found that I had indeed compiled gawk. I
don't know how or why it failed to transfer over.

I am using LFS 6.2. Indeed, I have seen the line:

gawk 'BEGIN { subdirs = ""; inhibit = "" };

It appeared just above the section I quoted. I guess that's confirmation
of the problem.

So I'll retrofit my LFS installation with gawk. Thanks for the advice.
