Dan, Thanks for your help. 

It's interesting to me that I could compile and run "hello world," which
uses stdio.h, but that "make install' reports it missing. That's got to
be a clue, but I'm not experienced enough with Linux to know what it
indicates.

I am close to the beginning of the process, so I'll clean out the $LFS
directories and start from scratch.
