As has been mentioned by others, you do not have to
remove the primary disk to make your lfs build
bootable.

to make the secondary disk bootable as a primary disk,
when installing grub, change the install path for the
mbr to be the mbr for the secondary drive. [ hdb or
sdb ] NOTE: you must make grup point to hda or sda for
when you remove the primary drive and change disc
position on the cable, or it will not be bootable.

it would be a good idea to also make a boot floppy if
you have a floppy drive, just in case of errors in the
grub configuration and installation to the hard drive.
