Hello again.

Problem solved!
Your hints were very useful to get my thoughts straight.

The MAC address I mentioned was reported when I did
  grep -H . /sys/class/net/*/address
as well as via
  ip link show

But I checked against the MAC which windows used and that was different
and did not show up on LFS.
So the kernel did not recognize the card. The card it recognized seems to
correspond to an entry of "ifconfig /all" output that starts like
  Tunnel adapter ...
Whatever that is... And there doesn't seem to be a connector on the PC
either.

With some Googling I found out how to configure the kernel to recognize
the card.
And it works now.

Roland.
