I have always had to modify xorg.conf on the livecd to get it to work
how I want it to. I have always gotten it to start, but its in
standard VGA mode (could have something to do with the fact that I'm
behind a KVM so it can't detect my monitor).

I do wish there were a way to install the proprietary nvidia.ko
somewhere and use that instead of the 2d vesa or nv drivers. Because
of this i just end up using the console. I gave up with the nvidia
because you obviously can't install to /usr on the livecd. (I know i
could remaster it). Unless someone knows a way to do this....
:)
