Sorry, yes I should have said it was on ext3. The fields, noted down with pen and paper, were: Last mounted on: <not available> Reserved block count: 48828 Free blocks: 214448 Free inodes: 377758 Filesystem state: clean dri is built in, according to /proc/config.gz : CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y That '<not available>' made me wonder if somehow I was trying to mount the wrong root fs (after all, I'd mounted it, failed to get anywhere with gdm, logged in at a tty, and shut down from a tty last time I tried to use it). So, I had another go at booting it - Straight into the gdm login screen! From here, it looks as if something magical has happened - I find that hard to believe, but the problem appears to be gone. I won't really believe that until I've finished trying to debug the problems in the new system - a certain amount of rebooting to the host will be needed until I can work out what I need to change.
