I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't select a particular driver. I'm not at the
console right now, but I'll check to see what specific framebuffer options I
selected in the kernel.

My recollection is that I selected general framebuffer support, and two
nVidia framebuffer options. I did that because I wasn't sure which driver to
use with my nVidia card (it's a just purchased PCI-E card). The kernel help
file wasn't too clear on which I should use.

I wonder if the presence of two nVidia framebuffer drivers is causing the
boot process to select one at random, one of which works with my card and
one which doesn't?

What driver do you select? I have a similar issue with nvidia, I switch to
VESA and then its function.
