If for any reason you can't use the user lfs, you have your environment setup wrong. This includes permissions for /sources and /tools. Also, it could mean you aren't in the right directory before issuing the build commands. Read section 5.1 again if that is the case. Using the lfs user sets the path and other variables properly. Go back through setting up the environment and do everything as user LFS in Chapter 4 and read section 5.1 again until it says to start using the root user.
