Update: I managed to SUCCESSFULLY boot up the IDE LFS Linux 2.6.25.4 drive on my new "SATA" machine.
Many thanks to Phill Upson, cx8508 and Mr. Beekmans. Also thanks to the cast of thousands who rooted for me all along. There are of course a lot of things still left for me to work on (clean up, new sound, video etc.) but like I said, all I needed was a fighting chance (and not to hit the VFS wall each and every time). Case closed. I had made a ton of changes in preparation for this last attempt, so I don't know what exactly did the trick yet but, for interested parties, a very short and quick list of suspects and things of interest comes to mind: - SCSI disk support (BLK_DEV_SD) _in_ the kernel (cx8508 - again, thanks). Actually I moved all my modules (within reason) into the kernel with wild abandon; I'll sort out everything later when I get a chance. - Possibly the new kernel (2.6._25_._4_). Yes, at the point of VFS failure I got a listing of drive/partitions the kernel was seeing "available" for me at that point. I don't recall getting that on 2.6.24.4 nor on 2.6.9. 'sdb2' partition was beckoning from the new list temptingly (the drive had been set for 'hda2'! ) so I quickly fixed the 'fstab', 'rdev' and "root=sdb2" (GRUB) which took me right past the VFS and on to the "login:" prompt. I sit another day or so on the "lfs-support" list for further comments (if any), then I'll fade off into the sunset. Not much more technical to say for the time being, I'm totally spent (but happy) right now and the light, sweet crude for July delivery hovering around US$133 a barrel is no help either. However, if anybody is interested in more details (at least half as interested as I am - I'm dying to know what exactly went on, first for the advancement of science then so I can next improve/streamline the process) I'll be more than ready and willing (don't know about able) to help.
