I thought of that, and tried it, but of course I had forgotten to first cd into the kernel directory, I was running "make mrproper" from the $LFS/sources directory. One more follow-up, after I run the commands in this section (5.6), do I then delete the untared kernel source directory? Or am I supposed to use the same files later on again when I actually compile the kernel?
