You write that the kernel has successfully mounted the root file system. Are you sure? This kind of crash is often due to a failure to mount /. How is the CF card connected physically?
You also write you have no initramfs. I suggest you create one -- then if initialization cannot mount root it will drop into a shell and you can examine the kernel boot messages.
