Sorry about that. I guess I wanted to provide all necessary context, but
obviously I provided way too much.

I tried it, and it compiled and installed cleanly. Thanks for the suggestion.
I still am curious why my original build of 4.26 did not work. For the record,
the relevant part of the compile log was:
make[2]: Leaving directory `/sources/file-4.26/src'
Making all in magic
make[2]: Entering directory `/sources/file-4.26/magic'
../src/file -C -m ../magic/Magdir
lt-file: No current entry for continuation
make[2]: *** [magic.mgc] Error 255
make[2]: Leaving directory `/sources/file-4.26/magic'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/sources/file-4.26'
make: *** [all] Error 2
