If you broke your host distro, I'd guess you failed to setup the build environment correctly in which case no, you can't continue lfs where you left off because the build hasn't gone right. If you setup the lfs user and symlink correctly for chapter 5, then chroot correctly for chapter 6, you shouldn't actually have permission to break your host distro at all. If unsure then I (like James) would recommend you use the lfs livecd, at least it's read only so you physically can't break the host then :)
