Well, I know your problem, but I'm afraid I don't know enough to fix it - you may have a 40GB HD, but you're not trying to write to it, you're trying to write to ~/.bash_profile, which is (i.e. should be...) /home/lfs/.bash_profile, which is on the live CD, which really is full. I'm not too familiar with how they're set up, but it would seem strange to have them full already! Have you downloaded other things onto the CD over the network? My LFS live DVD has only 83% used at startup.
