Ok.

Yes. Mint, Ubuntu Live CD and Ubuntu, I can hear the tone in both channels,
using

       speaker-test -c2 -tsine -f440

and, of course, the tone changes, using other frequencies. Does not work on
Xubuntu, Fedora nor OpenSuse. Curiously, only one control for alsamixer in
latter ones. This is also true for Mandriva (one control), but here, there is
no speaker-test installed, although there is a directory named speaker-test.
Even giving a broken sound, some of these do not display error messages from
speaker-test.

I believe the problem is not with kernel drivers, because Xubuntu, Ubuntu and
Mint should use the same, nor with the VMWare software, as the LFS machine has
proper sound, when booting the Ubuntu Live CD iso.

I am trying to do this. I t is very difficult, due to the large number of
modules. If it could aid for getting more help from you and from Bruce, I am
attaching the lines of the kernel config file in th VMW Ubuntu having the words
SND and SOUND.

I already updated the alsalib to 1.0.21a and recompiled the kernel 2.6.30.2
with the config file of the older 2.6.28-15 on the VMW Ubuntu, following
suggestions of the LFS book. Some strange questions appeared: compression, I
used bz2, something about classical I answered affirmatively. Lots of other
questions, I just hit the Enter key, as suggested in Bruce Dubbs text in
"Considerations when configuring the Linux kernel" in LFS book, chapter 8.3.1.
It took hours, instead of minutes, to compile, due to thousands, if not more,
useless, for this machine, drivers.

No difference at all, after rebooting. Fortunately, as a VMW machine, I replace
with the backup machine made earlier.

I have seen this, when buiding something for this machine, but do not remember
anymore. My alsamixer does not show such control.

Yes, I used --enable-kernel=2.6.18, but had no idea about the meaning.

I am a little timorous (could not find better word) of doing this, but will do.

Could find linux-2.6.28.10.tar.bz2 , but only
linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic_2.6.28-15.49_i386.deb and
linux-restricted-modules_2.6.28.15.20_i386.deb from ubuntu repositories. I have
the config files:
config-2.6.28-11-generic

config-2.6.28-13-generic

config-2.6.28-14-generic

config-2.6.28-15-generic

Understood.

As I typed above, probably not, the Live CD sound works just fine.

Thanks again,
