If you're using the nvidia driver you can't use the kernel framebuffer.
This isn't an easy solution, but have you tried the nouveau driver? It's on the
Device Drivers> Staging drivers part of make menuconfig. I've had good results
with a GeForce 9800 GT. It'll need extra firmware (I don't have the computer 
here
so I can't check the details) which you can either build into the kernel or
(more simply) build the nouveau driver as a module. The nouveau api changed in
the 2.6.34 kernel so you'll need to match the versions of libdrm, mesa and
the xf86-video-nouveau with the kernel you're using.
