Maybe you are right, but if you do, the failure is in my original toolchain,
not in what I do, because I ran into the same problem when building CLFS on
the weekend. The chances of making the same mistake twice are very low. My
workaround makes the thing compile in CLFS also.

That is right, but this seems to be irrelevant for me. Something is not
working, and I do things exactly as you have written in the book. So either
there is some problem with the book, or with certain tools with a specific
version, or with a certain architecture. In the latter cases, I think this
should be mentioned in the text somewhere. It is not interesting for me any
more, I nearly have my CLFS build ready, but can discourage future users
less savvy, than me.
