 In theory, the tests at the end of s5.8 ought to catch errors.
Sometimes, people log out and forget to reinstate their environment.
If you are keying it all by hand, perhaps it might be worth your
while to run 'ldd' on one of the binaries installed by binutils,
such as 'ld', just in case something is still wrong - or, if
scripting, test that in your script.
