You seem to go in the same direction as I; setclock has to be activated automatically. Check your /etc/rc.d/rcsysinit.d/ See if _you_ have something like Sxxsetclock -> ../init/setclock Like I said, I no longer see this trigger symlink, thus the puzzlement expressed in my OP, and the implicit pleading for help and clarification.
