I agree. The only difference I've ever noticed through using CFLAGS is
that they can make applications (xorg, firefox) crashy. That's a
discernible difference...but not for the better.
Just say no.

Fair enough, I am more interested in code correctness and ease of debugging
for my code than performance which is why I was looking at eliminating a
class of error (floating point math) early on but what I'll do is separate
my hard disk in two and test a stock install vs an optimized install.
