No, I definitely put those in.

However I am happy to report I may have experienced my first Heisenbug. I 
fiddled around with my script and this problem has gone, even though I can't 
see how the changes I made have anything to do with gcc!

Hello Christian,

is it possible that you forgot this last two lines:

--with-mpfr-include=$(pwd)/../gcc-4.6.1/mpfr/src \
    --with-mpfr-lib=$(pwd)/mpfr/src/.libs
