Do you have the via-rhine driver built into the kernel?

Device Drivers ->
   Network device support ->
     Ethernet driver support ->
       VIA Devices
       VIA Rhine support

I'm not really familiar with USB modems.  I haven't used a modem in 10 
years.  However the VIA site indicates a PCI network card.

On the host, you can try

lspci|grep -i network
lsusb|grep -i network
