I don't know what you had in the inputrc, but an error in that file can 
cause the problems you suggest.  The file in LFS is quite simple and I 
don't recall any reports about the problem.  Are you sure the one you 
had was the same as in the book?  Incorrect single characters can cause 
a problem.

Loading firmware is specific to the system.  If needed, I recommend 
building what you need into the kernel.
