*Argh* everything is ok - I must have been guided by stupidness, i.e. I have 
not executed 
CC=$LFS_TGT-gcc \
AR=$LFS_TGT-ar   \
RANLIB=$LFS_TGT-ranlib
before. Just tried it again and it worked... Sorry!

What is the output of the Host System Requirements script?

Note that /tools/lib64 should be a symlink to /tools/lib.
