Heh... I was about to suggest the same thing, until I saw your post. Yes, I've done that by accident at least once before... For those unaware, "-j" without a number means that the build should be run with as many parallel jobs as the Makefile dependencies permit, with no regard for whether the hardware can actually cope with that many jobs. With something as big and as modular as the kernel, that's a*very* large number...
