It depends so strongly on the hardware specs that I doubt there is a
"typical" one.

That said, I'm running multiple automated build of 7.6-rc1 for the
purpose of testing "MAKEFLAGS=-j8" vs. "as in the book", on a Lenovo
Thinkpad T440s.

So far, my approximate build times are something like:
no MAKEFLAGS : 49m for chapter 5 + 4h 25m    for chapter 6, excluding grub
MAKEFLAGS=-j8: 31m for chapter 5 + 2h 40m[*] for chapter 6, excluding grub

[*] this number is for a recent SVN build, when 7.6-rc1 was published I
decided to start the tests anew
