I discovered /etc/udev.conf on my LFS-6.6 says udev_log="err", but
there's no such file on my LFS-7.2, nor instructions to make one. So,
with kernel 3.8 causing no USB noise on the console, I thought that was
reason enough to add the file and try 3.10.64 again. No joy, but I have
no evidence that udevd is even looking at the file! Is there something
special we need to do to enable it in udev-188?
