I found another solution: you can
set -o pipefail
in the script.
Its effect is that "the return value of a pipeline is the value of the
last (rightmost) command to exit with a non-zero status, or zero if
all commands in the pipeline exit successfully".
(I tried putting
#!/bin/bash -e -o pipefail
as shebang but it doesn't work.)
