"Been there, done that!" ;-) Before going to that step, it's always advisable to have a bootable "rescue" disk *at hand*, preferrably one that uses Grub, or at least with GRUB on it. A bootable "Live CD", the old LFS or even Knoppix, is a great thing to have at hand in any event. If you had, one thing you could do is enter the necessary stanza by hand and boot into your new LFS-7.8. That would tell you if it really is built properly and runs. That divides the problem in two, whether it's the system itself, which not so coincidentally tried to setup the MBR and grub.cfg, or the MBR/grub.cfg itself.
