Mostly because the host OS toolchain is newer. If you want to build LFS
6.3, use distros that were out in that time. I've built LFS 2.4.4 with old
Slackware versions in VMware. For LFS 6.3 use the livecd's from here:
ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/lfs-livecd/  you can definitely build LFS 6.3
with those.
