After *each* command, look to see if any error is reported. [ When
you get to running *tests* in chapter 6, there might be a few
failures but no ordinary configure / make / install command should
report an error w hen it finishes.

Also, you can use the up-arrow cursor key to look through your
history to see if you ran the commands correctly, or just use
'history | less'.
