This is great! I think I'll start over with his updates...

I used the original helpers for my 7.7 build, but not without headaches.

I succeeded, at building and installing from inside the src, magic and 
doc sub-directories. It was just a work around to get to binutils so I 
could find out just how bad things really are. Binutils built and passed 
the tests, but failed to install. Hopefully the updates to the helpers 
made by Robert Taylor will get me closer. I'll keep notes and maybe 
contribute, depending on how my redo goes.

Maybe I can help revive interest in this method, you're welcome! ;)

Thank you for your time and input, I think that link to the 2013 post is 
my best path forward.
