Agreed. And in what follows, note that I haven't done systemd
and won't.

I got my systemd up and running yesterday; am now installing more stuff.

Systemd appears to boot ok up to a point, but then, after putting out
a login prompt and a bit of other stuff, puts out no more messages.
However, the system still appears to be running.

Turned out that I had somehow overwritten the .config file in linux-4.9.9. Once I sorted that out, systemd came right up.

I also won't use a Display Manager. I want to SEE everything that
happens in boot and init--especially in a new system I'm building! If
something goes wrong I want to see what and when. If it's all fine,
typing "sx" (my alias for startx) is a chore I'll settle for. Don't
know if systemd will allow you to boot without a DM, but it's hiding
what you need to know from you! Impermissible,in my book.

Nothing is being hidden. My systemd comes up and displays all the usual messages on the console (number 1). There I login as root. Then I switch to console number two (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and login as user lfs. Then I type startx twm which uses the guts of Bruce's .xinitrc, and fires up X. That script allows selecting any Display or Window manager. I suppose there are ways to install a DM without it automatically starting up the usual distro-type window, but I don't yet know the details.

Getting all this to work was tricky, but if I can do it, anyone can.

Part of the reason I'm using systemd is that I want to play around with installing Gnome, just to see what happens. Can't do that with non-systemd.
