I am assuming that it is safer to keep the kernel updated and hope for
the best. Currently, I'm mostly on (linux-libre) 4.14.14, but I have a
couple of i5 machines that are still on the 4.14.13. I'm working on the
basis that staged upgrades will mean that I only lose some machines if
things go wrong. Grim. If this is a wrong-headed strategy, please
advise. I am finding the discussion of these events on the list an
extremely helpful and informative supplement to the LFS-build process.
Thank you all.
Interesting. I'll note that we (LFS) do NOT recommend flashing firmware
at all. We have a page in BLFS on firmware that, among other things,
shows how to update the cpu firmware early in the boot process. That does
not make anything permanent like a firmware update does and the user can
easily revert to something else.
