FWIW, I always just go ahead and use the very latest, but stable (not an rc release), kernel. The note on the LFS page for the kernel (under the "Linux" package): http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/chapter03/packages.html pretty much agrees with that approach. At the other extreme, glibc and gcc tend to be very touchy with regard to version changes.
