You can try http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/basic/ but it is a little out of date. It is designed to be a gentle into to BLFS.
So far, I didn't use *systemd*, is *systemd* *preferred*?
Not in my mind. IMO systemd is meant to make things easier for distros, not users.
