Glad that explained it. I'm keeping the cut-down parts above in the
hope they will help google when someone next hits a similar problem
;-)
And yes, maintaining our own individual buildscripts is fun. Once
they work, logging what got installed is often useful when the next
build breaks. Unfortunately I don't have a simple answer for the
logging - my own scripts use some very tedious processes (also,
expensive in terms of disk space by the time I get to the end of a
full desktop build) to mostly get it right (with a few duff entries,
at least once booted, for other things which changed while a package
was being built.
