I often have to edit files stored on FTP sites (Web servers for example). I do a "get filename", then "!myeditor filename", then "put filename".
Could you add a command called "edit" for example, taking a file as parameter. This command would get the file and store it in a temp location, launch the editor specified in the $EDITOR variable on the file, and (when finished) then ask the user if he wants to put the edited file on the FTP server.
Since the basic commands are implemented, I think this would be easy to implement this new command. If you don't have time to implement it, I will see if I can do it and contribute with a patch.
lftp is a very good Free software. Continue hard work !
