Probably it is an ftp server bug. Try another ftp client to verify that.
You were absolutly right : ncftp gave me the same result : 2000 files, no more !
ncftp stops and says 'get *.jpg: socket read error.'
lftp stops and says 'Total 2000 fichiers transférés' with no error message ?
I'll contact the server guys.
