I don't know if this issue has been discussed before, but i discovered
this week, that the lftp default debian-testing package, compiled with
gnutls, without ssl, uses up to 80% cpu when downloading from an ssl/tls
enabled ftp site (data encryption enabled).
Now i compared it to a self-compiled lftp version, 3.5.6
--without-gnutls --with-openssl, and this version only takes about 5%
cpu when doing the same transfers from the same site. And yes,
encryption is on, the site enforces data-encryption for all transfers.

Any ideas?
